The Art of Face Mapping: What Your Breakouts Are Telling You
Pimples persistently popping up along your jawline? Constantly getting flaky, dry skin in the same spot? Well, your blemishes may be trying to tell you something important… so let’s take some time to listen!
Analysing the areas where these skin issues are arising can help us connect internal and external signals associated with various skin conditions. This technique is called “face mapping”, and is the ability to see the reflection of the body’s organs on each part of the face; meaning it can help you understand what your breakouts might signify about what may be going on inside (and outside!) your body.
Face mapping is an ancient technique inherited from Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine, dating back to several thousands of years (way before the days of LED treatments and DMK technology). Relying on the belief that a person’s skin is a reflection of their inner health, this 3000 year old technique is based on the concept that energy (aka qi) connects your organs along various invisible pathways like a map.
Thinking of the face as a “map” can help us to understand the correlation between the location of a skin concern and the potential triggers. Any malfunctions within the organs and the systems- immune, lymphatic, excretory, endocrine, digestive, circulatory, nervous and respiratory – will show up on the face in the form of breakouts, redness, dryness, irritation, itchy skin, rashes, lines, and puffiness.
While we hate to be the bearer of bad news… factors like stress, alcohol, that cheeseboard you may or may not have polished off the night before, and pollution are just some of the causes that can manifest as skin concerns on your face in different areas.
When it comes to the Face Map, we’re pretty good at giving directions. So let’s dive in!
Forehead
Your forehead is the correlation of your bladder and digestive system. If you’ve been slacking on your water intake, struggling with digestion, or perhaps under a bit more stress than usual, this is where your breakouts or lines might be showing up.
In Between Brows
Say hello to the stomach and liver connection. Indulging in rich, greasy foods or eating late at night might be a culprit to breakouts in this area. Same with some food allergies, including potential lactose intolerance and falling short on your water consumption.
Under Eyes
If you’ve not been sleeping well, or facing any deficiencies in your diet, kidney stress or insufficient water intake - this may be the root of your under eye lines and dryness. Skin concerns in this location, we connect it to the kidney, liver and intestines.
Left Cheek
Our insight into the liver and digestive system! Eating processed foods or getting your sweet tooth on with too much sugar (sadly yes, that means wine too!) can result in breakouts on your left side specifically. We can also blame the cheeky bacteria that carries over from our pillowcases and phones!
Right Cheek
The right cheek may be indicative of respiratory issues such as asthma, allergies, and smoking. Stress, pollution or also sleeping on your right side at night may be a sign that you need to swap pillowcases or wash them more frequently too. Of course, sugar manages to sneak its way onto this list too!
Jawline
Ah yes, a hotspot for our hormones! Commonly, acne along the jawline can be indicative of a hormonal imbalance, stress, or the onset of our menstrual cycle. Not getting a good night's rest, poor diet and dental work can also play a role here too.
Chin
Face mapping teaches us that breakouts on the chin can represent the connection between your stomach, kidneys and reproductive organs. If you’ve ever experienced imbalances here or within your diet, stress, not enough H20 and food allergies… you may be noticing some concerns in this vicinity.
Neck
While it may not be as common for breakouts, lines and stress along the neck area can represent your thyroid, adrenal stress or an imbalance of your hormones.
The Lip Area
Cheeky breakouts along the lip area? We might be able to take a look your hormones and intestines. Triggers may include your menstrual cycle (as well as ovulation!), constipation, IBS and food allergies.
Nose
Usually we like to say that a good wine and cheese combo connects us to our heart, but in the art of Face Mapping - this is actually our nose! High blood pressure, poor circulation, an unbalanced diet, indigestion, constipation and bloating and being too generous with the salt can also play a role in this.
Ears & Temples
The kidneys want you to listen up. Literally. Blemishes on the ears and temples can be related to kidney stress, not getting your 8 cups of water a day, being over-caffeinated, or not having a balanced diet.

With all that being said, we know a well-balanced life means we indulge in the good stuff in moderation! Whether that’s a greasy fish and chips after a day at the beach with the kids or a few too many flutes of bubbles with the girls on a Friday night, it’s important to enjoy these special moments guilt-free.
Here at LUMA, we like to use Face Mapping as a way to look at skin holistically. This is one of the many modalities we use when working with our clients to help balance their skin health concerns.
