Why You Should Swap to Natural Fragrance Right Now

All those expensive Mecca fragrances sitting in your makeup bag might be coming for us after you read this article BUT, as your resident skincare gurus it’s simply within our highest duty of care to advise you on all things good for your skin - and fragrance is no exception. That’s why we’re here to give you the low down on why you should swap to natural fragrances, stat!

Over 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream, organs and cells. Which is why what you put on your skin matters. Don’t believe us? Just think, why are nicotine patches, hormone therapy and pain patches so effective? Our skin is the biggest organ of the body, after all.

What a lot of people don’t realise is, regardless of them coming from the chemist or from a high-end designer (hello Tom Ford), the traditional fragrances we know and love are made up of molecules that merely mimic the scents we know and love. Whether you’re a floral gal or like it musky, traditional fragrances are made up of typically 95-100% synthetic ingredients. Crazy right?

Because perfumes pass key protective systems in our body by entering through your olfactory system then through your nose and into your lungs, bloodstream and brain, they can have immediate impacts on your body and health. Some of these can include headaches - including nasty migraines, nausea, asthma and anxiety. Parabens, another common ingredient in synthetic fragrances, can go so far as to interfere with hormone function, particularly oestrogen. In some extreme cases, they may promote breast cancer development, and have an impact on sperm development in males. In addition, parabens are a common skin sensitiser and may cause other allergic reactions such as asthma, hives, dermatitis and wheezing.

And don’t be fooled by “clean” fragrances, which can sometimes play a sneaky game! Oftentimes, the “clean” perfumes on the market disclose their ingredients list and may be created with safe synthetic materials but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are made using natural materials. In fact, sometimes no natural extracts may make it into a “clean” fragrance at all!

ALL THIS TO SMELL GOOD?

Natural fragrances mean their ingredients are exactly that - derived from a natural source. It’s something we don’t see a lot in the fragrance industry because it’s expensive to manufacture and there’s not a lot of them on the market. UNLESS of course, you happen to know a skin clinic in the South West of WA who just loves to take the very best care of your pretty skin….

MEET LUMA’S LATEST LOVE STORY: HERETIC PARFUM!

We are proudly stocking a new label called Heretic Parfum. Inspired by the traditional extraction methods of making fragrance, Heretic uses distillation, expression and extraction to get essential oils, isolates, absolutes and resins from plants and flowers. These ingredients are then blended into their fragrances at high concentrations to give you those dreamy aromatherapy benefits that can completely shift your mood. Relax and unwind with jasmine, or uplift your mood with citrus oils… these perfumes are truly the real deal! In short, they’re giving new meaning to smell good, feel good.

Keen to give them a shot? Come into clinic and try a spritz or two after your next LUMA skin or beauty treatment to figure out which one suits you best. From Dirty Vanilla to Dirty Coconut or Florgasm we think we may have just uncovered your new scent for summer!

With love,

LUMA xx
